Le drammatiche immagini dell’affondamento dell’Half Tonner Alchemist alla Round the Island Race 2016 riprese dalla RNLI di Mudeford, chiamata a soccorrere l’equipaggio.
Condotta da Andrew Talbot, Alchemist ha colpito un relitto al largo dei The Needles e i membri dell’equipaggio sono stati soccorsi da un gommone RNLI di Mudeford con base a Christchurch. L’equipaggio è stato prelevato giusto pochi secondi prima che la barca affondasse in 17 metri d’acqua.
Disegnata da Dubois e costruita nel 1978, Alchemist era in regata senza il suo armatore, il commodore dello Island Sailing Club (circolo organizzatore dell’evento) Mark Wynter.

La JP Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race, disputata oggi, sabato 2 luglio, è con circa 16.000 velisti e quasi 1600 barche uno dei più grandi eventi in termini di partecipazione nel Regno Unito dopo la maratona di Londra e la Great North and South Runs.

Primo sulla linea di arrivo il trimarano MOD70 Phaedo 3, che per fare il giro dell’isola di Wight, circa 50 miglia, ha impiegato 2 ore 23 minuti, 23 secondi, quasi 30 minuti in meno del record stabilito dall’AC45 di Ben Ainslie nel 2013.
Una piccola curiosità: a questa edizione erano iscritte ben 11 Folkboat, tanto da stilarne una classifica a parte.

La Round the Island Race è una delle regate più affollate al mondo, nel 2014 quasi 1600 iscritti, una grande festa della vela, un po’ la Barcolana degli inglesi.
Una cinquantina di miglia di periplo dell’Isola di Wight.

The J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race (Saturday 1st June) is the 4th largest participation sporting event in the UK and the largest yacht race of its kind in the world. Organised by the Island Sailing Club in Cowes, it is dubbed Britain’s favourite yacht race, attracting anything between 1,500 – 1,800 yachts and 16,000 competitors. www.roundtheisland.org.uk
